Bob Thomas

Commissioner Thomas was first elected to the Board in 2012, and was re-elected in 2016

Bob was elected as Chairman from November 2014 – October 2015

The number #1 reason why Bob Thomas ran for the District Board was that he wanted to contribute time and service to the community, and he wanted to see the fire department remain a volunteer department

Prior to Moving to the Keys:

Bob was born in Pennsylvania, but has DNA all over northern Alabama. As a Navy “brat” he attended eleven different schools throughout the world. He moved to South Florida in 1969 and has lived in the area for 34 years including Miami Lakes and Hialeah for over 21 years and in Coconut Grove on a 41′ Morgan sailboat for two years.

He sailed to Keys for years and enjoyed the beauty of the Keys and the people . . . and that is why he and his wife, Kristi, moved to the Florida Keys in the summer of 2002.

Professional Life & Affiliations:

As an airline pilot for over 42 years, Bob traveled extensively nationally and internationally. He worked primarily with Eastern Airlines, and also flew with Southwest Airlines, Saudi Arabian Airlines, American Eagle, Copa in Panama, Canal Zone. He is a past member of the ALPA Airline Pilots Association, and Allied Pilots Association. Bob was a member of the Optimist Club in Miami Lakes for over 15 years.

About two and one-half years ago, after retiring from the airlines, he and his wife opened Key Largo Chocolates. Bob may be seen traveling throughout the Keys in the bright lime-green Key Largo Chocolates truck.

Community Activities:

Bob is currently the Chair of the Rural Health Network, a Key Largo Chamber Board of Director, and member of the Islamorada and Ocean Reef Chambers, and a member of the Key Largo Rotary. He was one of the dunkee’s at the Key Largo 4 of July Picnic this year, and said he “could not keep track of how many times he was dunked”, but he said, “It was a lot of fun and will do it again!”

He is active in St. James Episcopal Church in the Vestry and as a lay leader, and is a past member of the Upper Keys Sailing Club. He was on the Board of Harborage Homeowner Association for several years, and a member of the Key Largo Island of Federation Homeowner’s Association for two years. He also picks up and delivers food to the Burton Memorial Food Bank every week.

When Bob is not working at the Chocolate Factory or for the District, he loves to golf, travel, and visit with friends and family. He has four sons and Kristi has two daughters, so they enjoy spending time with one of their eleven grandkids. In August 2013 he went golfing in Ireland!
